CHENNAI: A 20-year-old man from Chengalpattu district was arrested by police on Friday and for allegedly murdering and burying his four-month-old child born out of wedlock. According to police, K Varun, who works in a private company, took the drastic step as he was afraid that his father may not allow him to marry his girlfriend, the mother of the baby.

Two years ago, Varun of Periyar Nagar in Urapakkam mistakenly dialled the wrong number and got in touch with S Vijayalakshmi of Meenambakkam. The two fell in love and Vijayalakshmi became pregnant by end of 2021. “Although she informed her parents about the relationship, they were against it. Varun did not inform his parents,” police said.

After Vijayalakshmi gave birth to a baby boy last July, her parents agreed to their marriage and the wedding was held in a temple near their house. However, Varun did not inform his father, and by end of November, he left the house along with Vijayalakshmi and the four-month-old baby due to constant fights with his father-in-law.

“Vijayalakshmi finally found out about Mahalakshmi’s house and was shocked to learn that Varun had taken back the baby three days after he gave it to Mahalakshmi. Vijayalakshmi filed a complaint with the Manimangalam police and a case was registered,” a senior police officer said.

During the investigation, Varun confessed to having killed the baby out of fear of his father. He had buried the body near the Karanai lake bed. Police exhumed the body on Friday but the baby’s head was missing. Police have expanded the search area and Varun was remanded in judicial custody.

Reunion of the families of Sikh brothers -- Gurdev Singh and Daya Singh (in grey suit) -- who were separated during the partition at Kartarpur Corridor.

LAHORE: Seventy-five years after they separated during the Partition in 1947, the families of two Sikh brothers met at the Kartarpur Corridor, singing songs and showering flowers on each other in an emotional reunion made possible through social media.

The families of Gurdev Singh and Daya Singh arrived at the Kartarpur Corridor on Thursday for a reunion.

Emotional scenes of the family reunion were witnessed at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib where they sang songs to express their joy and showered flowers on each other.

Both the brothers hailed from Haryana and used to live in Gomla village in Mahendragarh district with their late father's friend, Karim Bakhsh, at the time of the Partition.

Bakhsh migrated to Pakistan along with elder Gurdev Singh while younger Daya Singh remained in Haryana with his maternal uncle. After reaching Pakistan, Bakhsh moved to the Jhang district of Punjab province, some 200 km from Lahore, and gave a Muslim name (Ghulam Muhammad) to Gurdev Singh.

Gurdev Singh passed away a few years ago.

Muhammad Sharif, son of Gurdev, told the media that over the years his father had written letters to the government of India to find the whereabouts of his brother Daya Singh. "Six months ago, we managed to find uncle Daya Singh through social media," he said, adding that both families decided to reach Kartarpur Sahib for the reunion. He urged the Indian government to give visas to his family members here so that they could visit their ancestral house in Haryana.

Last year, two brothers who separated during the Partition reunited at Kartarpur Corridor. Muhammad Siddique, 80, from Pakistan and Habib, 78, from India, met in January 2022 at the Kartarpur Corridor. They were also reunited with the help of social media.

The Kartarpur Corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Punjab province, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, with the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district in India's Punjab state. The 4 km-long corridor provides visa-free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit the Darbar Sahib.

Joe Biden Meets German Chancellor, Ignores Russia's Warning On Arms
Scholz said it was important to send a message to Ukraine that "we will continue to (support it)

Washington: The United States responded Friday to a Russian warning against arming Ukraine by offering a further $400 million in security assistance, as President Joe Biden hosted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a show of unity against Moscow.

The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group meanwhile said its forces had "practically encircled" the eastern Ukraine city of Bakhmut, which has seen the fiercest fighting of Moscow's invasion.

Western military aid for Ukraine has been key to Kyiv's ability to hold out against Moscow's military onslaught and to even regain ground, but the Kremlin said such assistance will only "prolong the conflict and have sad consequences for the Ukrainian people."

Arms deliveries "place a significant burden on the economies of these countries and negatively affect the well-being of citizens of these countries, including Germany," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Washington ignored that warning, announcing the new security package for Kyiv that featured ammunition, including for the Himars precision rocket system that Ukrainian forces have used to devastating effect against Russian troops and supply dumps.

In a display of partnership after friction over supplying tanks to Ukraine, Biden hosted Scholz at the White House for his first trip to Washington since Russia's invasion.

When they last met, "Russia was amassing its troops" on the border, Biden said in brief remarks to the press, adding the West had vowed to respond and "together we made good on that promise."

In reply, Scholz said it was important to send a message to Ukraine that "we will continue to (support it) as long as it takes and as long as it necessary."

The absence of a joint press conference raised questions about remaining difficulties, but the two leaders tried to dispel that impression, and Scholz said the bilateral relationship was "in a very good shape."

In another show of support for Ukraine, US Attorney General Merrick Garland made a surprise visit to the country on Friday to attend a conference on justice and war crimes.

"The attorney general held several meetings and reaffirmed our determination to hold Russia accountable for crimes committed in its unjust and unprovoked invasion against its sovereign neighbor," a Justice Department official said.

Battle for Bakhmut

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a video released on Telegram Friday that the group's units "have practically surrounded Bakhmut, only one road remains" to be captured.

The 61-year-old has regularly posted about the advances of Wagner, his once-shadowy force that has taken center stage in the fight in eastern Ukraine.

He has said in recent weeks that his fighters have seized three villages north of Bakhmut -- Yagidne, Berkhivka and Paraskoviivka.

Ukraine has said it will defend "fortress Bakhmut" for as long as possible, but this week officials said the situation was difficult.

Russia is determined to seize Bakhmut -- a now-destroyed city once known for its sparkling wine -- as part of its wider aim of capturing the entire Donetsk region.

Ukrainian troops have held out for months, fighting brutal trench warfare and artillery battles that have flattened large portions of the city, and President Volodymyr Zelensky this week said that the fighting was "only increasing."

His comments followed an assessment from the commander of Ukraine's ground forces Oleksandr Syrskyi, who said it was "extremely tense" in the city.

'Measures' at border

Both Ukrainian and Russian forces have reported heavy casualties in the struggle for control of Bakhmut, whose symbolic importance outstrips its military significance.

The battle has also exposed political rivalries between Prigozhin and Russia's regular army.

Last week, he issued an unprecedented call to Russians to take his side and urged the defense ministry to share ammunition with his fighters.

While the hotspot of the fighting is in the east of Ukraine, Russia said this week that a group of Ukrainian combatants had crossed into the southern Bryansk region.

Kyiv dismissed the claims as a "deliberate provocation."

The toll from a Russian strike that hit an apartment block in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia earlier in the week has risen to seven, Ukrainian rescue services said.

Moscow says its regions bordering Ukraine are routinely shelled by Ukrainian forces, but the reported incursion was a rare instance of fighting inside Russia.

The Kremlin said Friday it would take steps to prevent cross-border incursions which killed two.

"Measures will be taken to prevent similar events in the future," Kremlin spokesman Peskov said.

Ahead of India's 4th Test match with Australia, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma paid a visit to the iconic Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

A video going viral on social media showed the celebrity couple sitting inside the temple along with other pilgrims. They marked the attendance at the temple on Saturday morning, a day after the 3rd Test encounter between India and Australia in Indore came to an end.

"We came here to offer prayers and had a good 'darshan' at Mahakaleshwar temple," said Anushka Sharma as per ANI.

It is no secret that Virat and Anushka are religious people. Earlier this year, the duo also visited Rishikesh and Vrindavan with their daughter Vamika. While in Vrindavan, the family paid a visit to Baba Neem Karoli's ashram, in Rishikesh, they visited the Swami Dayanand Ji Maharaj's samadhi at Swami Dayanand Ashram.

Coming back to the ongoing Test series in Indore, on Friday Australia beat India by nine wickets at the Holkar stadium. India crumbled to 109 in the first innings, and if wasn't for Cheteshwar Pujara's half-century in the second innings, the hosts could've lost the game by an innings.

With this win, the Australians have qualified for the World Test Championship final, which is to be played at The Oval in London in June. India now needs a win in the final Tests to guarantee themselves a place in the final against Australia. Notably, the fourth and final Test will be played in Ahmedabad from March 9.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Anushka Sharma will be next seen in the sports biopic Chakda Xpress, based on cricketer Jhulan Goswami.

CHENNAI:  A POCSO special court in Chennai on Wednesday awarded double life sentences to three women for kidnapping a minor girl and forcing her into prostitution across the city in 2016. Three other convicts were awarded rigorous imprisonment and the girl was ordered a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.

The then 14-year-old girl was rescued from prostitution in 2014 and was sent to a home in Chennai. Fathima Moosa, who was also in the home at the time, befriended her and kidnapped her in 2016. She sold the girl to the three women—Mariammal, Sathya and Thamizh Selvi — and for several months, the minor girl was forced into prostitution by the trio.

Karnataka Lokayukta Bangalore City police has recovered Rs 6 crore cash from house of Prashanth Madal, Chief Accountant, BWSSB.

BENGALURU: The Lokayukta police have recovered Rs six crore cash from the house of BJP MLA Madaal Virupakshappa's son Prashanth Kumar a day after he was caught taking Rs 40 lakh bribe from a contractor.

According to Lokayukta sources, Prashanth, the chief accounts officer of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, was caught red-handed on Thursday evening while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh from a contractor at the Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited (KSDL) office.

Virupakashappa is the chairman of KSDL and Prashanth was allegedly receiving 'first instalment' of the bribe on behalf of his father, the Lokayukta sources said.

The policemen also found three bags full of cash from the KSDL office.

The Lokayukta sleuths raided Prashanth's house immediately after he was caught and continued their operations on Friday. The Lokayukta sources said on Friday they recovered Rs six crore in cash from Prashanth's house.

Prashanth was caught taking a bribe from a contractor who had supplied chemicals required by the KSDL for soap and detergent production. The MLA's son had demanded Rs 81 lakh and Rs 40 lakh was the first instalment.

The contractor had approached the Lokayukta a week ago and the trap was laid.

CM says trap proves BJP revived Lokayukta

Meanwhile reacting to the arrest, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the trap was proof that the Lokayukta has been revived to contain corruption, unlike the previous Congress regime which created a separate anti-corruption bureau apart from the Lokayukta institution to cover up their wrong deeds.

Due to the lack of a strong Lokayukta in the past, many corruption cases during the Congress regime could never get investigated, Bommai told reporters in Bengaluru.

"We have repeatedly been saying that we will conduct an impartial probe. Our stand, in this case, is also that the independent Lokayukta institution will carry out an impartial investigation and whoever has done wrong will face action. There is no change in our stand," Bommai said.

"All the information and the money found there everything is now with the Lokayukta. Let an independent and justified investigation take place. Our objective is that the truth should come out like whose money it was and for what purpose it was meant," he added.

Regarding Congress state president D K Shivakumar's statement that this incident was proof that the current BJP government is 40 per cent commission government, Bommai said there were many corruption charges against Congress MLAs and ministers but they covered it up by creating the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

He also said many corruption cases during the Congress regime have been given to the Lokayukta, which will investigate and bring out truth.

Alleging that the Congress MLA and former minister K J George had said in the Karnatkaa Assembly that the ACB should continue, the Chief Minister wondered what his intentions were.

"Whose side is he (George)? It's not possible to show off that they were the cleanest people based on this case (Lokayutka trapping MLA's son). There are many cases against them. Cases are being investigated. We will give all the cases to Lokayukta, which they had covered up," Bommai said.

New Delhi: Delhi Police have registered a case in connection to the incident in which a driver allegedly misbehaved with a woman journalist in an Uber auto-rickshaw in the national capital.

"Efforts to trace and nab the accused are on," said police officials on Friday.

"On 02.03.23 at about 11.00 pm, one Ms X resident of Bharat Nagar approached police station NFC and filed a complaint against one driver. She levelled allegations of indecent behaviour as well as lascivious staring by him, while she was travelling from NFC to Malviya Nagar on 01.03.23 at about 4.40 pm," read the official statement from Delhi Police.

Further ownership of the above was procured which has been found in the name of one Mohd Yunus Khan resident of A-439 Nehru Camp Govindpuri Delhi, who is being interrogated so as to nab the offender driver," read the official statement.

Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal said that a notice has been issued to Uber India and Delhi Police over the incident of molestation of a woman journalist in an Uber auto in Delhi.

On Thursday, Swati Maliwal in a tweet said, "Notice has been issued to Uber India and Delhi Police over the unfortunate incident of molestation of a female journalist in an Uber Auto in Delhi. Information has also been sought about the steps taken by Uber for the safety of women."

While talking to ANI, the victim woman said, "I was going to my friend's place in Malviya Nagar and I got into an auto from NFC. I booked the auto via Uber. I was alone in the auto. Since I was listening to music, initially I did not understand what was happening. After some time I realised that the auto driver was staring at me in the left side mirror. My breasts were visible in the mirror and he was looking at me. I became uncomfortable and shifted towards my right. However, he changed his position and started looking at me in the right-side mirror."

"After this, I moved to the extreme left corner so that I am not visible to him but he turned back and started looking at me. I threatened him and said that I would complain and surprisingly he did not object. So I opened the Uber App and clicked on a number on the app. However, due to fluctuating network, I could not contact so I called on the number once again. This time as well I was unable to contact the company due to various glitches on the app," the woman added.

The woman further stated that the Delhi Woman's Commission swung into action after she tweeted about the incident.

Demanding woman's security in the national capital, she said, "The incident happened with me in broad daylight. I had the option to confront as it was daytime. What if the incident happened during the night? The Uber App did not work. There should be a proper system and they should have called me back. When I raised my voice against the incident, the company contacted me."

Education At Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering Degrades In Standards Due To Low-Qualified Faculty

Sri Eshwar Engineering College was established in the year 2008 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Inadequate support from the management of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering leads students to adverse conditions. The students from other states are the ones who suffer more from the lack of backing up from the management’s part.

The staffs of the college do not consider the needs of the students and are not ready to address it. Even after many complaints, the management has said that they will do the needful, but the truth is that they had never done anything. Students are tired of requesting the management to fulfil their needs and have given up on requesting because of its dormancy.

Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering, Sri Eshwar Engineering College Coimbatore, Sri Eshwar Engineering College, Sri Eshwar College Coimbatore
Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering

The infrastructure of Sri Eshwar Engineering College Coimbatore is also average without much issue but also not of high-quality amenities. The college also claims that they have an anti-drug campus but the students undergo the risk of facing drugs as the campus is not totally drug free. Hostel facilities of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering are also not much good. The food is poor and students have to manage with what they offer, and this mostly affects the students from other states.

The education of the institute is also degrading day by day because of the unqualified staff. Only few of the faculty have the required qualification to teach engineering students and many ithers have become faculty in the college only after the completion of post-graduation. These faculty are not able to fulfil the proper teaching requirements and educate the students well. Thye simply focus on completing portions on time = so that they can keep their record. This is the overall condition of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering and it is not similar to what is seen from the outside.

Scholarship Scam: CBI finds serious irregularities in 13 out of 22 educational institutions under radar

The CBI has discovered serious anomalies in 13 out of 22 educational institutions that are under investigation in connection with the Rs 250 crore scholarship scam.

According to agency sources, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has discovered serious anomalies in 13 out of 22 educational institutions that are under investigation in connection with the Rs 250 crore scholarship scam.CBI officials said that investigations showed that these 13 universities accepted scholarships in the names of roughly 2,000 fake students. They are yet to examine the remaining institutions' accounts and other paperwork.

The CBI has discovered serious anomalies in 13 out of 22 educational institutions that are under investigation in connection with the Rs 250 crore scholarship scam.
The CBI has discovered serious anomalies in 13 out of 22 educational institutions that are under investigation in connection with the Rs 250 crore scholarship scam.

The CBI investigated the documents, accounts, and data it obtained from computers and other related material of these institutions in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh and found that scholarship funds had been siphoned off and awards had been given to students who either didn't exist or had left the institutions.

These organisations received a sizable portion of scholarship funds.

HOW THE SCHOLARSHIP SCAM TOOK OFF

The scam went underway when the scholarships for pre-matriculating and post-matriculating students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes under 36 programmes were not given to eligible beneficiaries in 2012–2013.

Since the person who built the online interface for scholarship disbursement was also in charge of sending the money, the scam went unnoticed for over five years.

After claims were made that government school pupils in the tribal Spiti valley in the Lahaul and Spiti region had not received any scholarships for the previous five years, the issue finally came to light in 2018.

Inquiries had revealed that certain institutions had misled the education department by using fake letterheads to demonstrate bogus affiliations. The department also failed to carry out physical checks of the infrastructure and student numbers.

The additional irregularities included the institutions' failure to submit student Aadhaar numbers, the withdrawal of scholarships using the same Aadhaar account from many students who did not exist, and the establishment of fictitious accounts in nationalised banks.

The institutions allegedly used blank checks and vouchers submitted at the time of admission in order to withdraw the scholarship funds, working in collusion with some staff of nationalised banks who created the accounts without verifying Aadhar.

According to reports, the administration registered their own numbers as students' phone numbers in order to receive SMS notifications of transactions and make cash withdrawals. Read More

Around half the candidates cheat at entry-level job assessments!

Many businesses were obliged to immediately change their employment and working methods as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Traditional in-person hiring procedures were no longer practical or secure due to social distancing policies in place and the prevalence of remote working. As a result, many businesses started embracing online tools and platforms to carry out virtual assessments, interviews, and other hiring-related tasks.

The opportunity to reach a larger pool of candidates, better efficiency and speed in the hiring process, and the capacity to lower costs associated with in-person interviews and evaluations were just a few advantages of using online approaches for hiring.

A HirePro report found that 30% to 50% of candidates cheat during entry level job assessments.

However, this change also brought its own set of difficulties, including the need to adjust to new communication techniques, technological concerns, fraudulent activities, and new methods of evaluation and assessment.

A recent study by HirePro, a provider of recruitment automation and assessment solutions, offers insightful information about candidates' dishonest behavior during online exams. The study's goal is to give employers the tools they need to cope with candidates' cheating.

Out of the 43 lakh assessments completed on its platform in the last 12 months, HirePro used a sample size of 9 lakh assessments completed in the last six months for this study.

The study shows that when there is insufficient effective proctoring, cheating attempts during online job examinations rise by 80% to 100%. As per the survey 30% to 50% of applicants cheat during exams for entry-level jobs, according to the survey.

For lateral job assessments, this number drops to 10% to 25%, or approximately half. The survey also contends that as candidates gain work experience, their propensity to cheat decreases.

HOW PROCTORED ASSESSMENTS CAN HELP

The results show that effectively proctored online exams perform better than exams that are physically proctored. As a technique, proctoring has developed to be secure and dependable for administering official online tests.

Online proctoring, however, requires holistic oversight, which includes keeping an eye on a variety of video, audio, picture, and web browsers, in order to produce the greatest outcomes. Read More On..
