The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is carrying out raids at multiple locations in South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian as part of its investigation into a terror funding case. The case pertains to the terror funding and criminal conspiracy hatched by the terror groups operating under various pseudo names, at the behest of their Pakistani commanders or handlers.

Searches are also underway across 13 locations in Budgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Srinagar, and Anantnag in cases related to the hatching of conspiracy, both physical and in cyberspace. Raids by the NIA are a sweeping crackdown on proscribed terrorist outfits to execute violent terrorist attacks in J&K with sticky bombs, IEDs and small arms.

On May 11, the probe agency carried out raids at the residence of Abdul Khaliq Regoo at Kansipora, Javid Ahmad Dhobi at Syed Kareem and Shoaib Ahmad Choor at Sangri Colony in Baramulla district into a terror conspiracy case.

The NIA action comes weeks after a deadly terror attack in Poonch that killed five soldiers. Days after the Poonch attack, five Army personnel were killed when terrorists cornered by the troops triggered an explosion in a densely forested area in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. An officer was also injured in the explosion caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Earlier, the NIA attached properties belonging to three accused persons at various places in Kashmir under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act following court orders.

The NIA has been carrying out raids in Jammu and Kashmir to crack down on new terror outfits such as The Resistance Front (TRF), United Liberation Front Jammu & Kashmir (UL J&K), Mujahideen Gazwat-ul-Hind (MGH), Jammu & Kashmir Freedom Fighters (JKFF), Kashmir Tigers, PAAF and others.

These terror groups have come into focus after the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5, 2019.

These outfits have taken responsibility for most of the militant attacks carried out in the last three years, especially in Jammu’s Pir Panjal area.

“Investigations have further revealed that Pak-based operatives were using drones to deliver weapons, bombs, drugs etc. to their operatives and cadres in the Kashmir valley,” the agency said in a statement.

The sleuths of the central agency, assisted by the police and paramilitary forces, have carried out raids at multiple locations in Srinagar, Baramulla, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, and Budgam districts of Kashmir, as well as in Poonch, Rajouri and Kishtwar districts of Jammu this month alone.

Yogi magic fails in Meerut-Saharanpur as BJP loses 64 of 90 municipal seats

The poll result has become a major concern for the BJP as the data showed that Yogi Adityanath’s magic did not work in the rural and semi-urban areas.

Yogi magic fails in Meerut-Saharanpur as BJP loses 64 of 90 municipal seats

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath (File)

In the recent UP civic polls, the BJP may have been able to win all the 17 Nagar Nigam seats and logged a landslide victory but the numbers in the western part of the state, especially in Meerut, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur divisions, did not signify the impact of the Yogi wave at the Nagar Palika and the Nagar Panchayat levels.

This has become a major concern for the party as the data showed that Yogi Adityanath’s magic did not work in the rural and semi-urban areas.

In the Meerut-Saharanpur division, except for the mayor’s seat, the BJP’s magic did not work. The saffron party lost 64 of the 90 seats in the municipality and the panchayat presidentships in both the mandals. The BJP candidates could win only on 26 seats and independent candidates have worked their magic in cities like Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, and Ghaziabad. Importantly, these are the districts where the BJP was reduced to just one seat each.

In both the mandals, the BJP got the maximum number of seats in the municipal bodies from Bulandshahr. Of this, nine chairmen are from the BJP. Even though the BJP’s campaign revolved around the impact of Yogi Adityanath’s governance and benefits of flagship schemes, it could not transcend into votes in these divisions.

Talking about leaders, General VK Singh (Retd.) is an MP from Ghaziabad. Sanjeev Balyan is a Union minister from Muzaffarnagar. Apart from these, Narendra Kashyap from Ghaziabad, Somendra Tomar and Dinesh Khatik from Meerut, Kunwar Brijesh Singh from Deoband, KP Malik from Baghpat, Jaswant Saini from Saharanpur are also state ministers. Also, there is one Rajya Sabha MP each in Ghaziabad-Noida and two in Meerut. But this could not get the numbers in their favour.

Similarly, the BJP’s state organization general secretary Dharampal is from the Bijnor district. State vice president of BJP Mohit Beniwal Shamli, state ministers Dr Chandramohan and Amit Valmiki are from Bulandshahr, state minister Basant Tyagi is from Ghaziabad. The exercise to deploy ministers on ground could not work for the BJP.

As the reason for BJP’s defeat has been said to be about the ticket claimants damaging approach, there was a huge uproar in the party over the distribution. There were open allegations of money exchanging hands in the distribution of tickets. In Bulandshahr, the BJP gave tickets on two seats to candidates who joined the party just a year back. The old workers, who did not get the chairman’s ticket, contested the elections as rebels and got the votes.

On the other hand, in Noida’s Jewar seat, a candidate who joined BJP a few days before the election was given a ticket. The BJP cadre turned revolted and the result was that the candidate finished at the fourth spot. The BJP also lost Loni, Khoda and Muradnagar seats in Ghaziabad due to infighting. The candidates who did not get a ticket fought against the party as independents, creating a triangular fight.

                                                      treatment after consuming spurious liquor.

Chennai: At least 10 people, including three women, died allegedly after consuming spurious liquor in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu. Giving details, officials told news agency ANI that six people from Ekkiyarkuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district died on Sunday. Two persons in Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district died on Friday and a couple died on Sunday, all caused due to illicit liquor consumption, officials said. They further added that more than two dozen people are undergoing treatment and are said to be doing well.

Two Accused Arrested

Police said two accused have been arrested for supplying illicit liquor and added that special teams have been formed to search for more suspects. Senior police officer Kannan, IG North Zone, stated that a total of seven policemen including inspectors and sub-inspectors have also been arrested.

MK Stalin Announces Compensation

In the meantime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a financial compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who died, and Rs 50,000 for those who are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Police to Take Action Against Culprits

After the incident was reported, Inspector General of Police (North) N Kannan assured proper actions and said that all 10 victims possibly consumed spurious liquor with ethanol-methanol substances in it.

He further added that two separate incidents of spurious liquor deaths have been reported in the north zone of Tamil Nadu and as of now police did not find any evidence of a link between the two incidents but police are investigating from an angle to find any possible links between both the incidents.

“Two spurious liquor incidents have been reported, one in Chengalpattu district and another one in Villupuram district. In Ekkiyarkuppam village under Villupuram district near Marakkanam, yesterday 6 were hospitalised with complaints of Vomiting, eye irritation, vomiting and giddiness. On information, a police team reached the village and admitted ill to the hospital. In this four have died as they didn’t respond to the treatment while two are in the Intensive Care Unit. 33 are doing well with treatment,” the IG said.

Giving details about the second incident in Chengalpattu district where 4 people died, IG N Kannan said, “In the morning, one case was reported from Chithamur of Chengalpattu district where two persons of a family died. While another person was undergoing treatment in the hospital. Initially, we thought this could be a suicide attempt because of a family dispute but after watching their symptom we suspected it to be a spurious liquor incident.”

Taliban says China seeking investment in Afghanistan's oil, gas

Afghanistan foreign minister with Chinese diplomat(Chinese government)

The Taliban on Sunday said that China is seeking to invest in the gas and oil sectors in Afghanistan, reported Tolo News.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP), Homyaoon Afghan, said that they have provided essential facilities for the investors.

“The minister thanked the investors and said that Afghanistan is rich in gas and oil and it is expected that in the near future there will be announced the extraction of gas and oil in some areas,” he said.

Earlier in January, the ruling Taliban in Afghanistan signed a contract with a Chinese company to extract oil from the Amu Darya basin as the group tries to improve the economy of Kabul, Tolo News reported.

China and the Taliban signed the agreement at a ceremony in the presence of senior members of the Islamic Emirates and Chinese Ambassador Wang Yi.

Afghanistan’s acting mines and petroleum minister Shahabuddin Delawar, said the first three years will be exploratory and that in this period more than USD 540 million will be invested, reported Tolo News.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Chamber of Industry and Mines (ACIM) said foreign investment is important for a rise in national income and the creation of job opportunities for citizens.

“This is a good opportunity for Chinese companies and also for Afghanistan… This is a good opportunity both for Afghanistan and China,” said Sakhi Ahmad Payman, deputy head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Industry and Mines (ACIM).

Earlier, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce reported that China had invested and signed contracts in Afghanistan worth USD 2 billion in investment after the fall of the former government.

While no country has officially recognized the Taliban, China has a substantial investment in the region. Afghanistan is looking for investments as its money is still frozen.

One of the main issues for Western countries has been the new government’s marginalization of minorities and women.

But, security is the most important issue that China is concerned about. Regarding Afghanistan’s central geopolitical position and abundant resources leading to its addition to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2016, the Taliban’s security guarantees to China have not prevented instability, which continues to threaten the BRI’s economic viability.

The Taliban are not the sole provider of violence in Afghanistan, with groups such as the Islamic State (IS) committing rival acts of violence.

From the Chinese perspective, there are two fundamental objectives that are important vis-a-vis Afghanistan: domestic stability, which includes maintaining control over Xinjiang and ensuring that Afghanistan does not act as a staging ground for Uyghur militants; and trying to protect the substantial Chinese foreign direct investments in regional countries, especially the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

But violence against Chinese interests from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has increased as China’s footprint in the region has expanded, and while it is risk-acceptant, it has reacted, in order to convey a message.

Supreme Court Notice To Bengal, Tamil Nadu Over 'The Kerala Story'

West Bengal was the first state to ban 'The Kerala Story', saying is it "likely to cause a breach of peace".

Supreme Court Notice To Bengal, Tamil Nadu Over 'The Kerala Story'
Supreme Court Notice To Bengal, Tamil Nadu Over 'The Kerala Story'

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today sought to know the rationale behind ‘The Kerala Story’ movie being banned in West Bengal when it is running across the country without any problem.

“Why should West Bengal ban the movie? It is running in the rest of the country including in states having similar demographic composition and nothing has happened. This has nothing to do with the artistic value of the film,” observed a bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha, and issued notices to West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Though the movie has not been banned in Tamil Nadu, theatre owners have decided not to screen it over law and order concerns, a move that the makers claimed was a “de facto ban”.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the West Bengal government, cited intelligence inputs to claim there may be a law and order problem.

The court also sought to know about the security provided to theatres screening the movie in Tamil Nadu. It told the state’s counsel that the government cannot look the other way when theatres are attacked.

The matter has been posted to next Wednesday.

The Sudipto Sen directorial sparked controversy with its claim that 32,000 women in Kerala were forced to convert to Islam and they joined ISIS, which the Opposition alleged was a false claim.

West Bengal was the first state to ban ‘The Kerala Story’. In a notification on Monday, the government said it has prohibited the movie’s screening to avoid “any incident of hatred or violence to maintain law and order in the state.”

The makers of the movie had challenged the Bengal ban in the Supreme Court, citing they were losing money every day.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said the movie was aimed at defaming the state of Kerala and condemning its people. She also targeted the BJP for “creating communal politics”.

‘The Kerala Story’, produced by Vipul Shah, depicts how a group of women were allegedly forced to convert to Islam and recruited by the ISIS terror group.

The movie stirred a political storm with the Opposition parties alleging that 32,000 women joining ISIS is an exaggerated figure.

While the movie faced obstacles in Opposition-ruled states, it received tax reliefs in BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Elon Musk Finds New Twitter CEO, Says "She Will Start In 6 Weeks"

Elon Musk Finds New Twitter CEO, Says "She Will Start In 6 Weeks"

NBCUniversal executive Linda Yaccarino is in talks to become Twitter's chief executive officer, the Wall Street Journal reported, following owner Elon Musk's announcement that he had found a new leader for the social network and will shift into a new role as chief technologist.

In a tweet on Thursday, Musk said the company's new CEO will start in about six weeks, without naming the individual. Yaccarino, who is chairman of global advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal Media, didn't respond to an email seeking comment, and a representative for NBCUniversal said she was in rehearsals for the company's Upfront presentations to advertisers.

Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last October and indicated that he'd only be in charge for a limited time to complete the organizational overhaul he thought the company needed to prosper.

Musk complained of having "too much work" and sleeping at Twitter's San Francisco headquarters while implementing radical changes.

In December, Musk asked his Twitter followers if he should step down as CEO, and 57.5% said yes. The billionaire will remain executive chairman after the transition.

Musk, who's also CEO of Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., has drawn criticism for his abrupt policy changes at Twitter and neglect of his other businesses. He's also changed the corporate name of Twitter's parent to X Holdings, an entity that could eventually be the parent for all his businesses - an idea he has publicly mused about.

Musk has also said he wants to build Twitter beyond social media and into an "everything app," including financial services.

The next CEO will have to deal with the fallout from his ownership, including an advertiser exodus. Despite a slight uptick in daily users since early 2022, Twitter's revenue has fallen by 50% since October as a result of a "massive decline" in advertising, Musk said in March.

The company's Twitter Blue subscription service plan has also been flailing, drawing less than 1% of the user base. Musk has cut thousands of jobs, scaled back the company's content moderation and allowed accounts previously banned for breaking rules to return.

Musk already has a friendly relationship with Yaccarino, who interviewed him last month at a major advertising conference in Miami, and called him "friend" and "buddy" on stage. Recently, Twitter and NBCU expanded their Olympic Games partnership.

"I can say that she would be my first choice, and my only choice, to save the platform from the hands of its owner," said Lou Paskalis, who advises marketers as chief strategy officer at Ad Fontes Media, on Twitter. "I still cannot understand why she'd subject herself to @elonmusk, however!"

Puck News' Dylan Byers also reported via a tweet that Musk planned to name Yaccarino as Twitter's CEO, citing two people familiar with the matter.

₹ 30,000 Salary, 7 Crore Found In Raids: Madhya Pradesh Officer In Trouble

Hema Meena, a contractual in-charge assistant engineer with the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation, had also used materials meant for government projects to build her house, officers said.

₹ 30,000 Salary, 7 Crore Found In Raids: Madhya Pradesh Officer In Trouble

Bhopal: Twenty vehicles including 5–7 luxury cars, 20,000 square feet of land, two dozen cattle of the prized Gir breed, and a high-end 98-inch TV with a price tag of ₹ 30 lakh were just some of the assets found in an eye-popping anti-corruption raid on a 36-year-old Madhya Pradesh government officer who makes ₹ 30,000 a month.

Hema Meena, a contractual in-charge assistant engineer with the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation, has been found to own assets worth crores of rupees in her and her family’s name after just over a decade of employment.

A search conducted by the anti-corruption watchdog at her residential premises revealed the vast array of wealth, which also included 100 dogs, a complete wireless communication system, and mobile jammers, among other valuables.

On Thursday, a team from the Lokayukta Special Police Establishment (SPE), entered Ms Meena’s upscale bungalow under the guise of repairing solar panels.

In just one day, the team unearthed assets worth around ₹ 7 crore, a staggering 232 per cent more than her known sources of income.

The initial investigation revealed that Ms Meena first purchased 20,000 square ft of agricultural land in her father’s name, then constructed a large house worth around ₹ 1 crore.

In addition to the luxurious residence, the engineer has been found to own land in Raisen and Vidisha districts as well.

Preliminary findings also suggest that materials meant for use in projects of the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation were used by the engineer to build her house. Heavy agricultural machinery, including harvesters, have also been seized.

Manu Vyas, Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta, Bhopal, told NDTV that the search operation was conducted at three locations, including Ms Meena’s residence in Bilkhiriya.

Initial estimates indicate that Ms Meena’s assets are worth around ₹ 5 to 7 crore, with more likely to be uncovered as the search continues.

“We will have to take help from other departments as well in determining the actual value of whatever has been seized so far,” Mr Vyas said, adding that a case has been registered against the accused.

Cabinet reshuffle in TN: PTR shifted to IT, Thangam Thennarasu to Finance; Rajaa gets Industries

Incidentally, the portfolio change for PTR came weeks after the release of audio clips attributed to him in which he allegedly charged that the chief minister’s son and son-in-law have amassed wealth.

Cabinet reshuffle in TN: PTR shifted to IT, Thangam Thennarasu to Finance; Rajaa gets Industries
Governor RN Ravi administers oath to TRB Raja as minister at a function held at Raj Bhavan, while Chief Minister MK Stalin looks on.

CHENNAI: In a major reshuffle of portfolios, Chief Minister MK Stalin today shifted Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR) from the finance portfolio to information technology and made Thangam Thennarasu the new Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu.

As expected, TRB Rajaa, who was sworn in as a minister has been given a key portfolio of industries. T Mano Thangaraj will be the Minister for Milk and Dairy Development, hitherto looked after by SM Nasar, who has been dropped from the cabinet. MP Saminathan, Information Minister has been given an additional portfolio of Tamil development.

PTR will now handle the subjects of information technology and digital services. Rajan, in a quick message, thanked the chief minister for the opportunity given to him as finance minister as well as for allocating the information technology portfolio now. He also recalled his tenure as the finance minister of Tamil Nadu for the past two years.

Thangam Thennarasu, who has been made Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management, will handle the following subjects: planning, pensions, pensionary benefits, statistics and archaeology.

Incidentally, the portfolio change for Palanivel Thiaga Rajan came weeks after the release of audio clips attributed to him in which he allegedly charged that chief minister’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin and son-in-law Sabareesan have amassed wealth. Rajan said the audio clips are fabricated ones and the chief minister also sought to downplay it saying he did not want to speak anything on the issue as it would give publicity to those engaged in cheap politics. The second audio clip was released by BJP state president K Annamalai.

TRB Rajaa, MLA from the Mannargudi Assembly constituency was sworn in as a minister at a simple function held at the Durbar hall of the Raj Bhavan here. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rajaa in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. The swearing-in ceremony was over in eight minutes. Later, the reshuffled cabinet headed by the chief minister took a group photo with the governor.

As expected Rajaa has been allotted industries portfolio. Rajaa, son of DMK treasurer and leader of the DMK parliamentary party TR Baalu, is a part-time member of the State Planning Commission. Rajaa has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Assembly for three terms since 2011.

MP Saminathan, Minister for Information has been given additional portfolios of Tamil development, previously handled by Thangam Thennarasu. After the reshuffle, Saminathan will be handling the following subjects: Tamil Official Language and Tamil culture, information and publicity, film technology and Cinematograph Act, newsprint control, stationery, printing, and government press.

Meanwhile, within a minute after the portfolio change was announced, PTR, in a lengthy message in Twitter, said: “The past two years have been the most fulfilling in my life. Under the leadership of CM MK Stalin, I presented one revised budget (2021 — ’22) during the pandemic, and two annual budgets (’22 — ’23, ’23 — ’24) post-pandemic. Despite inheriting record deficits and debt ratios, we have invested in a record number of social welfare schemes as well as record capital spending, all while delivering record-setting fiscal improvements. This is the epitome of my public service, and indeed of my life.”

PTR also said while fiscal consolidation and social spending are necessary steps for an equitable society, the drivers of development and growth are investment, enterprise expansion, and job creation.

PTR also thanked the chief minister for assigning him the portfolio of Information Technology — globally the №1 industry for investment and job creation today. “We know that technology shapes the future. Though Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in this field in Thalaivar Kalaignar’s time, we have unfortunately lagged our true potential in this sector in the last decade or so. I plan to build on the great efforts of my predecessor T Mano Thangaraj to attract more investments, accelerate job-creation, and deliver growth at a pace that will re-establish Tamil Nadu as a leading state in IT,” PTR added.

PTR also expressed confidence that his own experience in establishing and managing a pioneering Global Capability Centre 15 years ago, and the connectivity with the IT & ITES Industry gained during my professional career, would enrich his efforts in this new role.

“I wish the incoming Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu great success and many more achievements as he assumes responsibility today. I am sure he will accelerate the progress already made and deliver new records in his tenure. I thank my leader CM MK Stalin again, both for providing me with the previous portfolio for two years, and for this exciting new role to serve the people,” PTR added.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Friday informed a special court that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by women wrestlers against WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh.

The submission was made before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal in response to the court's earlier order directing the police to file a status report.

"Considering the seriousness of the case we have formed a SIT. The SIT will be investigating the case," public prosecutor Atul Srivastava told the court, stating that a status report has been filed in the matter.

He requested that the report must not be shared with anyone considering the nature of the case. The report has been filed by the Delhi Police in a sealed cover. After the submission, the court posted the matter for further hearing on May 27.

The judge had issued notice to the Delhi Police on a plea moved by the wrestlers seeking monitoring of the investigation and recording of the statement of the alleged victims before the court.

The wrestlers have been demanding the arrest of Singh, accusing him of sexually harassing several women wrestlers, including a minor.

The Delhi Police has filed two FIRs, including one under section 10 of POCSO Act against the BJP MP, who has denied all the charges.
